Typically, most people take care of their cars better than they take care of their own body. This is baffling considering the comparative value of our cars vs. our health. If our body breaks down, we cannott replace it with a new one like we can do with a car.
People desire reliable performance from their vehicles while at the same time desiring to avoid unexpected and costly breakdowns. They take them to the garage for regular service and periodic checks so that vehicle systems like steering, braking, and cooling continue to do their job.
They oversee and maintain essential fluids like oil and gasoline. If they expect high performance from their cars they use high performance, high octane fuel. With most people it is also a matter of personal pride to keep their vehicles looking good.
But what about taking care of the health of our body? Unfortunately, we do not exercise the same standard of care when it comes to our own health. Just like a car our bodies require care, maintenance, and fuel to function properly. It’s important that we maintain our body if we want it to last a long time without periodic or serious break downs.
Just as vehicle systems must be maintained, the systems of our body; circulatory, immune, respiratory, digestive, etc. have to be maintained.
A Six Point Maintenance Program for Our Body:
Maybe it’s time to initiate a maintenance plan for our body. What should be part of such a plan?
1) Use a Preventive Maintenance Program.
Most people are familiar with equipment repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance programs. The most costly and the least intelligent out of the three programs is to do nothing, await equipment failure and then to carry out repairs.
To be proactive about our health we should follow a personal health and wellness plan. Health and wellness plans are similar to equipment preventive maintenance programs. They are the opposite of a reactive philosophy, i.e. seeking treatment after we get sick. Health and wellness plans zero in on the various components of living a healthy lifestyle; exercise, nutrition, avoidance of toxins, and other things.
2) Get the Right Fuel.
Nobody in their right mind would put subpar fuel in their fuel tank, especially if they have a high performance vehicle. Eating junk food and other foods that contribute to health problems is the equivalent of filling a vehicle fuel tank with contaminated fuel.
3) Get Enough of the Right Fuel.
Eating nutrition-deficient food is similar to putting low octane fuel in a car gas tank. Even those who do their best to get their recommended 9 to 12 daily servings of fruits and vegetables can be a victim of this problem due to the loss of nutrients in fruits and vegetables because of green harvesting, soil depletion, and modern farming techniques. Consuming organic foods does not completely solve this problem either.
In the event that 9 to12 daily servings of fruits and vegetables did contain the required nutrients, it would still be quite a challenge to eat 9 to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. That’s why most experts recommend that we supplement our diets with nutritional supplements that supply the minimum daily requirements of fruit and vegetable nutrients.
4) Pay attention to trouble lights.
Don’t ignore signs that you may have a health problem. See your health care practioner when signs of trouble appear. Unaddressed, minor problems can grow into major ones. When a problem is diagnosed, look for treatment that addresses the underlying cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. Treating symptoms only is similar to putting a strip of tape over the low oil light on the dashboard of your car.
5) Take It For a Spin Once in Awhile.
Extended periods of inactivity are bad for both vehicles and people. Be active and engage in exercise on a frequent basis.
6) Don’t Overload It.
Overloading a vehicle with excess weight is unsafe and can cause wear and failure of critical components, including the engine. Maintain a healthy body weight. If need be find a healthy weight loss plan that includes reduction of caloric intake, exercise, and possibly a weight loss supplement that burns fat while retaining lean muscle. The Body Mass Index (BMI) Scale can help determine an individual’s ideal weight.
