What Fish Oil Dosage Should You Take Daily For Optimal Health?

Most health conscious individuals have heard by now that taking fish oil supplements are among the best things one can do to improve their well-being.

The brain is made up of and, therefore requires, a tremendous amount of omega 3 fatty acids, especially DHA, to function optimally.

These essential fatty acids are also crucial for cardiovascular health, warding off certain types of cancer, helping maintain a slim figure, and many other benefits.

But what fish oil dose do you need daily?

Well, it will depend on your health and if you have any preexisting health conditions. If you do, make sure you discuss it with your doctor first. For some conditions, you may want to take more than a typical person, and for some, you’ll want to take less.

If you are a generally healthy adult, however, you’ll want to take between 1,000mg to 2,000mg per day.

Keep in mind, this fish oil dosage is not pure omega 3. If you examine the breakdown of the soft gels, you’ll notice a certain amount of that 1,000mg to 2,000mg is made up of DHA, some will be EPA, and some will be Omega 6 and Omega 9.

These are all naturally occurring in any fish oil. Just make sure you’re taking in more DHA than anything else, as that is the most useful and beneficial of all the omega 3 fatty acids.

The amount of DHA and EPA is not consistent across all fish oils because the ratio is dependent upon the type of fish the supplement is produced from. The richer, fattier fish species are the more healthy varieties.

Perhaps the best choice is that of the New Zealand Hoki, a fatty deep water fish that thrives in the pristine Ocean waters off the Southern coast of that country.

This is the type I personally use because each soft gel contains 280mg of DHA omega 3 as opposed to 120mg of EPA omega 3.

Since I am a healthy adult, I sometimes take 1,000mg per day, and sometimes 2,000mg as my fish oil dose.

Your dosage level may vary a bit, but there’s a good chance it will be within the range that I personally use as well.
